Peter Mac is many things to many people – a world-class cancer research institute, Australia’s only public hospital 100% dedicated to cancer research, and a place of hope and comfort to thousands of patients and their families as they face a cancer diagnosis.
What makes Peter Mac really special, though, is the people. The clinicians, medical staff, researchers, volunteer and supporters – and our own Unite to Fight Cancer community.
In 2019, Peter Mac is marking 70 years since its establishment. It’s a story that starts with the vision of one man – Sir Peter MacCallum –and expands, over time, to the shared passion and commitment of everyone who’s been involved in its breakthrough research and growth. That includes you, as a valued Unite to Fight Cancer participant.
Just recently, Peter Mac asked staff and volunteers to share their thoughts on what makes Peter Mac so special:
This is a special year for Peter Mac as we celebrate 70 years since our founding. To help mark this milestone we asked our people what makes Peter Mac a special place, what drives them at work and what’s their message for our founder Sir Peter MacCallum.See how our staff and volunteers responded.

Over the past 6 years, thousands of people have supported Peter Mac through major events like Unite to Fight Cancer, including from its transition from the old hospital at St Andrew’s Place, to the fantastic new state-of-the-art Peter Mac in Grattan St.
This week our Unite to Fight Cancer community is celebrating our achievements, and those of Peter Mac over the last 70 years, and committing ourselves to an even bigger impact in the next 70.
We’re inviting all of our supporters – past and present – to share their stories of why Peter Mac is so special to them, and your hopes for the future through this year’s Unite to Fight Cancer.
We’ll also be announcing some special events this week – so keep an eye on your email and our Facebook page to be the first to know!
